Heavy rain is expected over the central and western Free State, southern North West Province, and eastern parts of the Northern Cape. An intense cut - off low is expected over the western parts of the country from Sunday to Tuesday. The public is advised that heavy rain and flooding can be expected over the northern and eastern parts of the Northern Cape, parts of the North - West and Free - State, as well as the eastern parts of the central and Little Karoo, spreading to the Eden District and Overberg on Monday, persisting into Tuesday morning. Small stock farmers are advised that short period of intense rain leading to localised flooding can be expected.

WATCHES: 1. A gale force south - westerly wind of 35kt wind is expected between Cape St. Francis and Kosi Bay. 2. Heavy rain of 50mm or more within 24 hours is expected in places over the North - eastern parts of KwaZulu - Natal , the lowveld and escarpment of Mpumalanga as well as the south - eastern parts of Limpopo Province overnight into Sunday.

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: 1. Extremely hot temperatures are expected in places over the nor th - eastern parts of KwaZulu - Natal as well as the lowveld of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. 2. Extremely uncomfortable and humid conditions are expected over the north - eastern parts of KwaZulu - Natal as well as the lowveld of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.  

MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:  Isolated thunderstorms were observed yesterday in areas of SA.  Buffelsjagriver experienced a "Mini" Cloud Burst, flooding parts of the N2. This was as a result of the cut-off low situated south of the country in the ocean.  Heavy rain and thunder were observed over the ocean yesterday afternoon in the Mossel Bay area.

MSBWX General Weather Observations:  Cool, warm to very hot conditions expected today over parts of SA. Thunderstorms and rain showers can be expected in parts of   Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West, 
Free State, Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal.  Moderate to heavy rain showers expected in areas of the Western Cape.

GENERAL: Lightning Kills!! - Johannesburg - A 9-year-old girl died after being hit by lightning in Marble Hall, Limpopo police said on Friday. Refilwe Mokau, in Grade 3 at Makalakanye Primary School, was struck at Ga-Botha village while on her way home from school on Thursday, police spokesperson Lethunya Mmuroa said. "She was rushed to Lefiso clinic for treatment. Unfortunately she didn't survive." - SAPA

MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:   Yesterday severe weather was observed in parts of Free State, Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal. Bloemfontein experience flash flooding as a result of a heavy downpour. Several roads and parks were flooded.  Reports were received of hail, intense lightning, dust storms and very strong wind in Kwazulu Natal and the NE Cape. MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:   Yesterday severe weather was observed in parts of Gauteng, North West and Kwazulu Natal.  Apart from hail, heavy rain and flooding a tornadic event was observed in Gauteng while a wall cloud made it's appearance over Rustenburg. Approximately 30 houses were damage in Protea Glen, Soweto after a tornado struck the area. No reports of injuries to people were received thus far.  Here are a few images and a video of the severe weather experienced yesterday.

WORD OF ADVISE:  Tornadoes are natures freaks and they are killers. Rotating thunderstorms are the best predictors of tornado activity.  They are well defined thunderstorms that may include hail, severe winds, lightning, heavy rain and flash flooding.  Tornadoes can occur when a warm front meets a cold front, forming a thunderstorm, which can spawn one or more tornadoes. Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 15h00 and 21h00 but can occur at any time if conditions are conducive. 

1. Although no severe weather watches or warnings were issued by the SA Weather Service yesterday, tornadic clouds were observed by several observers. Thunderstorms most likely to spawn tornadoes are called supercells. A good example yesterday of such a thunderstorm was the one in Rustenburg.  Thankfully it did not mature enough to turn into a severe weather event.  

The public are advised to keep on monitoring the weather closely.  Be aware what is happening at all times.

Storm Observation Images and Video: Gauteng (24 October 2014)

Yesterday was an interesting storm observation day for parts of Gauteng. "Tornado, Twisters, Whirlwinds, Land spouts, etc.   This is how observers described the "unusual" weather phenomena.  I say unusual because thus far this years storm season started with "strange" weather events like, small hail but loads of it, a large dust storm that started in the Bloemfontein and moved over the Gauteng area, loads of lighting and thunder but very little rain, veld fires started by lightning in areas not prone "lightning fires". Adding yesterdays observations and looking at a 15 year period of the start of a storm season then the 2014/2015 season  is definitely more interesting than others.  It would be interesting to see what mother nature throws at us as the storm season unfolds. This afternoon should yet be another interesting afternoon weather wise in parts of  South Africa.  Keep those cameras at hand you might just observe and interesting weather phenomena.   In the meantime here is a few images and a video of  yesterday's storm observations.  SAWXREP and Mossel Bay WX Observations would like to thank each and every observer for posting observations.

National Severe Weather Observations: The latest forecast predictions still reflect the possibility of light rain over parts of the Limpopo, North West, Western CapeEastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and Free State.

The weather system is expected to bring light rain over parts of the interior and eastern coastal regions today.  With enough moisture and instability there is a 20% possibility of thunderstorms in areas of North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.  The SAWS has issued a weather watch  for severe thunderstorms  for parts of the North West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga.

National Disaster Observations:  Aftershocks is expected to continue for the next few days in the Orkney and Klerksdorp areas.  The intensity of aftershocks may vary.
