Mosselbaai - Bestuurder sterf grusaam in brand in die Robertsonpas

Die bestuurder van 'n vragmotor wat gisteroggend net voor 08:00 in die Robinsonpas omgeslaan het, het grusaam gesterf toe die kajuit waarin hy vasgekeer was, uitgebrand het.

 

Volgens nooddienswerkers was die vragmotor in vlamme gehul toe hulle op die toneel kom. Volgens die woordvoerder van ER24, Russel Meiring, is die vuur binne 15 minute geblus waarna die liggaam van 'n persoon in die be-stuurdersitplek gevind is.

 

Die vragmotor het aan die Mosselbaai kant van die pas in 'n draai omgeslaan en aan die brand geslaan. Die passasier, wat verskeie snywonde opgedoen het kon daarin slaag om betyds uit die kajuit te kom.

 

Hy is per ambulans na 'n hospitaal in Mosselbaai geneem. 'n Lid van die SAPD wat teen druktyd op die toneel was het bevestig dat die vragmotor aan Danie Vermeulen Vervoer van die Noordkaap behoort en dat die oorledene die 26 jarige mnr Patrick Pitso was.

 

Die pas was die grootste gedeelte van die dag gesluit en verskeie swaar voertuie wat nie kon omdraai nie, moes tot ongeveer 12:00 wag voordat die trok geskuif kon word om hulle deur te laat.

 

Die pas is weer vir verkeer gesluit nadat die swaar voertuie deurgery het en is eers laat gistermiddag weer oopgestel.

Rare and amazing image: Although a bit late to report this image is still worthy for record purposes.  The image depict a funnel cloud in the Mossel Bay area as observed and photographed by Frik.  Thanks Frik for sharing this rare image.

I have been living in Mossel Bay for more than 20 years and this is the first funnel cloud reported in the Mossel Bay area.  A few years ago a water spout was reported at Brenton on Sea in the Knysna area.  And who say's that  Mossel Bay has the second best climate in the world?  One never knows what Mothern Nature can throw at you.  Always keep and eye on the weather and keep your camera close-by!

Mossel Bay municipality addresses weekend drownings

Social media is abuzz after three teenage boys drowned on Sunday afternoon at Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay.

The question about the availability of lifeguards on the beaches in Mossel Bay was raised as there were only lifeguards in town until the previous Saturday.

The three Asla Park teenagers aged 13 and 14 drowned after getting into trouble in strong surf. Two bodies were found beyond the surf on the sea bed while the father of two of the children managed to bring one child ashore.

He was declared dead on the scene.

Mossel Bay Municipality spokesperson Harry Hill has extended the municipality's condolences to the families of the deceased.

He stressed that the municipality only provided lifesaving services during the peak of the holiday season from the middle of December to the 4th of January as the service came at a substantial cost.

 "We still have four beaches at this moment which have lifeguards, they are the four blue flag beaches of Mossel Bay, Hartenbos, Little Black River, De Bakker and Santos.

I want to emphasise that Diaz Beach is not a blue flag beach, that is why we have provided the life saving service there for the same period as we did for all the other non Blue Flag beaches." says Hill.

Three teenagers drown at Dias Beach in Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay: At 14h29, Sunday, 11th January, NSRI Mossel Bay duty crew dispatched rescue swimmers and launched the sea rescue craft VODACOM RESCUER II following reports of a drowning in progress at Dias Beach, Mossel Bay. A Police Sea Borderline boat, that was also carrying members of the Police Dive Unit, WC Government Health EMS, the SA Police Services and ER24 ambulance services also responded. On arrival on-scene it was found that three children, 2 boys and a girl, believed to be aged approximately 14 years old and believed to all be friends from Mossel Bay, had been swept out to sea by rip currents while swimming. An unidentified adult female had rescued the girl from the water and had commenced CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) but paramedics declared the girl deceased after CPR was unsuccessful. The Police boat had located and recovered the bodies of both of the boys from the water but both had succumbed to drowning and were both declared deceased by paramedics. The bodies of the 3 teenagers have been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket. Family that were on the scene are being supported by Police trauma counsellors. - NSRI

MSBWX - Once again rip currents claimed three young lives.  We need to be vigilant and alert when swimming in the sea.  Only swim under supervision and between demarcated areas.  Adults need to take responsibility and keep a watchful eye on their children and where they swim.

Detonation of Fireworks during New Years Eve and New Years Day festivities

The new year is upon us and many parties have been scheduled for later tonight. Many of these parties go hand in hand with the detonation of fireworks to celebrate the beginning of 2015.

Last year several fires were started as a result of the public detonating fireworks in areas of the Southern Cape. Now I hear you say "So what......we are having fun". This attitude is absolutely irresponsible. MSBWX appeal to the public not to detonate fireworks in South Africa this year.  In Mossel Bay the detonation of fireworks are totally forbidden. Now this year the detonating of fireworks could have serious effects and could lead to run-away veld fires causing extensive damage. The Southern Cape experience a dry spell and vegetation is very dry.

Wildfires can cause major environmental, social and economic damages. The loss of plantations, wildlife habitat, homes and even lives may result from a devastating wildfire caused by fireworks. The wildfire that does not start is the one that does not have to be fought.

With the current fire risks across the Garden Route area due to dry conditions and increasing urbanization, now is the time to be more FIREWISE.

Chinese Lanterns during New Years Eve and New Years Day festivities 

MSBWX appealing to the public not to set off Chinese Lanterns. Chinese Lanterns are made out of a balsa wood or thin wire frame, a paper shell and a candle in the centre. The candle is lit allowing the generation of heat to send the lantern skyward where it floats through the sky (similar to a hot air ballon) until the candle burns out and then the baloon falls to the ground.

Once Chinese Lanterns are set off they are usually abandoned by the people setting them off and are seldom, if ever, followed by their owners to be properly disposed of wherever they land. It is widely believed to be near impossible to predict what they will do or where they will go once set off as they are at the mercy of the elements of the weather and wind conditions.

Chinese Lanterns are often mistaken by eye-witnesses as red distress flares. They are also feared to be a fire hazard – if they are caught in the wind and land in trees or dry grass fields or on buildings while the candle is still burning.

The NSRI strongly believe that, based on the potential risks that chinese lanterns may pose and based on the number of false alarms that the NSRI respond to, which turn out to be chinese lanterns mistaken to be red distress flares, that the practice of setting off chinese lanterns, into the sky, is irresponsible behavior and should not be practiced.

Mossel Bay: Formic acid spillage at harbour

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - PetroSA, South Africa's National Oil Company (NOC), has experienced a formic acid spillage at the Mossel Bay Harbour.

The spill occurred on the evening of 17 April, due to a failure that caused the forklift to drop its load, resulting in the spillage.

Formic acid is an organic substance used in the oil and gas well stimulation treatments.

Formic acid was spilled on a tar surface at the Mossel Bay Harbour, of which approximately 10 litres flowed into a storm water drain. The area was barricaded and cleaned up by PetroSA's emergency response unit and the Mossel Bay Fire Department.

The Transnet National Ports Authority has, in accordance with the law, been informed of the spillage incident.

As a precautionary safety measure, the Sea Gypsey Restaurant, which is situated at the Mossel Bay Harbour, was evacuated to prevent restaurant patrons from inhaling fumes omitted from the spillage. The restaurant was also closed for business for a day.

"Following the incident, no injuries were reported to employees or any other persons. At PetroSA, safety is one of the cornerstones of our operations, which is why our teams responded promptly and timeously to the incident," Zama Luthuli, PetroSA' s Vice-President for Corporate Affairs, said.

"A formal investigation into the incident has been launched. More importantly, we wish to thank all our partners for the prompt assistance and cooperation in dealing with the incident," she added.

Mosselbaai - Geen skade na chloorgas ontsnap

MOSSELBAAI NUUS - 'n Ontsnapping van chloorgas weens by die Pinnacle Point-rioolsuiweringsaanleg het geen impak op die omgewing gehad nie.

Volgens 'n verklaring deur die munisipale woordvoerder, mnr Harry Hill, is die silinders onmiddellik toegedraai sonder dat daar enige nadelige gevolge vir mens of natuur was.

"Die oorsaak en plek van die gaslek, 'n klep wat nie behoorlik gesluit het nie, is intussen herstel. Dit is die enigste vorm van chloor wat by die aanleg gebruik word, en dit word as standaardprosedure in die suiweringsprosesse gebruik.

"Die gesuiwerde rioolwater word vir besproeiingsdoeleindes na die opgaardam van die Pinnacle Point-gholflandgoed gepomp, en hulle vraag is so groot dat die aanleg nie genoeg kan voorsien nie. Geen gesuiwerde rioolwater, wat in elk geval aan streng standaarde gestel deur die Departement van Waterwese moet voldoen, word van die rioolaanleg weggevoer sodat dit in die see kan beland nie," sê mnr Hill.

Mosselbaai - Reebok: Trein met 13 waens val om

MOSSELBAAI NUUSFLITS - ‘n Trein met 13 waens het vroegoggend in Reebok omgekantel.
Die trein het na bewering gas en sement vervoer.

Volgens bronne is die treindrywer nie beseer nie, alhoewel dit nog bevestig moet word.

Die Mossel Bay Advertiser is tans besig om meer inligting te kry, maar volgens ooggetuies, het hout ‘sleepers’ waarop die spore rus onder die trein meegegee.

Transnet is glo in die proses om die treinspoor op te gradeer.
