SA National Weather and Disaster Observations: 3 November 2014 04h00 SAST - MSBWX

SAWS SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS:

WARNINGS: ------ Nil

WATCHES: Heavy falls leading to flash flooding are possible over the Free State and the North West province as well as over the western parts of the Western Cape, spreading to the eastern parts on Tuesday morning.

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: An intense cut-off low system is expected to affect the Western and Northern Cape as well as the Free State and the North West Province on Monday and Tuesday. The public and small stock farmers are advised that heavy falls and flash flooding are possible in places.

MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:  A rather impressive satellite image greeted us this morning. It would appear that the cut-off low is getting more organized and is expected to influence the weather in the Western and Northern Cape, Free State and NW province today and tomorrow.

Forecast models still show a fairly intense cut=off low developing influencing the weather in the Western parts of South Africa. There are still great uncertainty regarding the exact position and intensity of rainfall and where it might occur. The public should take note that a cut-off low is a significant weather event  which could result in severe weather bringing with it gale force damaging winds, heavy rain, flash flooding and severe thunderstorms with hail.  Cut-off lows are notorious for causing significant damage in the past in South Africa.  We need to keep an eye on this weather system at all times.  MSBWX and SAWXREP  will continue to monitor any further developments relating to this weather system and will issue subsequent updates as the system develops and intensifies.

19 Fires detected over the past 24 hours in South Africa. Please contact your nearest fire fighting unit, Working on Fire or Local Fire Fighting Service when fires are observed. The earlier a fire is detected to better the chances of extinguishing the fire.
