MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:   Hail, hail, hail and lots of it.  Gauteng experienced a blanket of small hail yesterday afternoon in some parts of the Province. No reports of serious damage were received however the storm caught the SA Weather Service off guard with warnings being posted very late on social media. Real time weather observation reports and images saved the day on Twitter and kept the public informed once the storm was observed before depositing its load. Twitter once again showed that it is the best medium to report severe weather and disasters. I recommend that the public follow @SAWXREP for real time weather observation reports from the public for the public. A big thank you to all who send in reports and images of severe weather and disasters on a regular basis.  Highly appreciated.  Herewith a few images of hail in Gauteng yesterday.

NSRI National Warnings:  With the summer holiday on our doorstep, the NSRI has sent out a plea to beach goers to be sensible. Their plea comes after recent tragic accidents have again highlighted the necessity for basic water safety precautions. The NSRI also appeals to schools, and parents, across the country to educate children to be safety conscious around water and to always ensure responsible adult supervision for children around water, including swimming pools, rivers, lakes, dams and the ocean. Supervising teachers should be adequately prepared to deal with an emergency. Statistics from the Medical Research Council show children up to the age of 14 are most at risk from drowning in South Africa. The NSRI’s Water Wise Academy has successfully trained over 500 000 children around South Africa on water safety, what to do in an emergency and how to initiate basic bystander CPR. - NSRI
