SA National Weather and Disaster Observations: 28 August 2014 04h00 SAST - MSBWX
SAWS SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS:
WARNINGS: --------- 1. Heavy falls of rain and localised urban flooding is expected over the Cape Metropole, Overberg and Cape Winelands Districts as well as along the south coast of the Western Cape. 2. Gale force W to SW winds of 65 - 75km/h are expected bet ween Lamberts Bay and Cape Agulhas, reaching East London in the afternoon. 3. Disruptive snowfalls are expected over the highlying areas of the Western Cape, the southern parts of the Northern Cape as well as the northern highlying areas in the Eastern Cape in the evening. 4. High seas with waves heights from 6.0 to 7.0m are expected between Lamberts Bay and Cape Agulhas, spreading to Plettenberg Bay in the afternoon. 5. Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the eastern p arts of North West Province, northeastern Free State and northwestern KwaZulu - Natal as well as over Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: --------------------------- The intense cold front is expected to continue to affect the Western, Northern and Eastern Capes provinces on Thursday, resulting in strong winds over the interior, possibly reaching gale force
National Severe Weather Observations: HIGH FIRE RISK - A high fire risk is currently experienced in parts of South Africa with several large fires currently burning. 593 fires were detected over the past 24 hours in South Africa. Please contact your nearest fire fighting unit, Working on Fire or Local Fire Fighting Service when fires are observed. The earlier a fire is detected to better the chances of extinguishing the fire.
General Weather Observations: An intense cold front has moved in over the western parts of the country and already effected parts of the Western - , Northern- and Eastern Cape. Very cold conditions is expected behind this front. Be advised that heavy rain and localized flooding has already occurred in the Western Cape. Light snowfalls has been observed in the Sutherland area. Strong to gale force winds were observed over parts of the central interior and coastal belt yesterday.
