SA National Weather and Disaster Observations: 19 August 2014 04h00 SAST - MSBWX

National Severe Weather Observations:  Due to dry and hot conditions an extremely high fire danger  can be expected today in places over the Central Karoo as well as the NW and central parts of the Eastern Cape.  Reports have been received of strong winds over parts of the Western and Eastern Cape.  Strong winds can cause run away fires.  Please be very careful when making open fires today.

General Weather Observations:  The latest forecast predictions reflect the possibility of light rain and a 20% chance of thundershowers over parts of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu Natal, Northern Cape, Lesotho, Free State and North West.

National Disaster Observations: Update 06h20 (19 August 2014) - The search is set to resume later this morning at the site of a building collapse in Alberton.

Alberton Building Collapse (18 August 2014) - Rescue operations at the scene of a building collapse in Alberton have been concluded with the death toll now at nine and those injured amounting to 19. ER24 and various other rescue service personnel were on scene for several hours working to retrieve the people trapped beneath the rubble. They extricated and treated 20 patients for injuries ranging from minor to critical. One of these men later died in hospital.
As the rescue operation proceeded, eight bodies were removed from the rubble.
The collapse occurred while the men were working on the construction of the building.
The exact cause of the collapse is unclear at this stage and the necessary investigations are underway.
