Ok we now have a more detailed cold front approaching from the west which is expected to make landfall later this evening early tomorrow morning.  Pre-frontal rain has already fallen over parts of Cape Town tonight and further heavy rain (1 to 50mm) is expected in areas of the Western- and Northern Cape from tonight to Thursday with possible flooding in low lying areas. In the event of flooding do not try to cross flooded roads, rivers, bridges, ravines or ditches.  Do not drown rather turn around. The latest satellite image clearly reflect the front and very cold air behind the front which might result in snowfalls on the high mountains of the Western-, Northern-, Southern-, Eastern Cape and even KZN  as this cold air moves in behind the front. Experience has taught us to be very vigilant when snow falls on mountains of the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal.  Last year and the year before last people had to be rescued that were trapped in mountain passes due to heavy snowfall.  If at all possible use alternative routes or postpone you trip until after the cold front has passed. If you have to travel take extra food, warm clothes and blankets with and monitor social media for weather updates.  Strong to Gale force NW (50 - 80km/h) wind  already occurred today in parts of the Western-, Northern-, and Southern Cape and is expected to continue as the front moves along. Be ware of fallen trees and do not use roads that are covered by trees as you never know when a tree will be uprooted by the wind. Very rough seas with waves between 4 to 9m can be expected along the South African coastline for the duration of the forecast period.  Do not venture into or onto the sea and postpone all sea and estuary activities.  Looking at the latest prediction charts there is the possibility for the development of a cut-off low system by Friday.  However it is still to early to say weather this will indeed materialize.

SAWXREP will continue to monitor the progress and effects of this weather system.  Updates will be available here or on our Twitter page at @SAWXREP or Facebook page by clicking HERE.

SAWXREP request real time weather observation reports from the public.  Tweet us at @SAWXREP or post on our Facebook timeline by clicking HERE.

Finally:  Please stay safe and if in doubt postpone outdoor activity and road trips to a later date.  Do not become another severe weather statistic.  To all our emergency services, disaster management personal and Search and Rescue personal take care and return safely whenever you receive the call for duty.
