Upper Air Trough expected to move in over parts of South Africa 19 - 21 May 2014

An upper air trough is expected to bring some rain and thunderstorms to parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape, Southern Cape, Eastern Cape this afternoon and evening.  These conditions are expected to spread to parts of the Free State and North West by Tuesday.  Light rain is also expected in parts of  Gauteng and Kwazulu Natal by Wednesday.   Rainfall of between 1 - 25mm is expected to fall in areas.  The heaviest rain is expected to fall in parts of the Karoo and Northern Cape.  Herewith the expected rainfall prediction for some larger towns:

Upington - Heavy rain (total 23mm)
Beaufort West - Moderate rain (total 12mm)
Prieska - Moderate rain (total 16mm)
Carnarvon - Moderate rain (total 19mm)
Oudtshoorn - Light rain (total 2mm)
George -  Light rain (total 8mm)
Mossel Bay -  Light rain (total 8mm)
Port Elizabeth - Light rain (total 6mm)
East London - Light rain (total 4mm)
Graaff Reinet - Light rain (total 6mm)
Colesberg - Moderate rain (total 14mm)
Bloemfontein - Moderate rain (total 10mm)
Welkom - Moderate rain (total 11mm)
Kimberley - Moderate rain (total 14mm)
Warrenton -  Moderate rain (total 15mm)
Bloemhof - Light rain (total 8mm)
Vryburg - Light rain (total 3mm)
Lichtenburg - Light rain (total 2mm)

Johannesburg - Some drizzle 
Durban - Light rain (total 2mm)     



    
Finally as always thunderstorms can result in severe weather.  We therefor need to be alert of lightning and strong wind. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to a storm to be struck.  Under ideal conditions lightning's thunder can be heard 19 km away. Even if the sky looks blue and clear, if you hear thunder take cover.
