Aeroplanes turned away from George Airport (14 May 2014)

GEORGE NEWS - The rainy and misty weather conditions experienced at the George Airport on Wednesday morning resulted in three scheduled flights having to be diverted on account of poor visibility.

Airports Company SA (Acsa) George Manager Brenda Vorster said a fog bank was lying below 300ft at 08:00 that morning.

"We had a flight coming in at 07:00 this morning as the clouds were situated above the 300ft limit, but by 08:00 the situation changed and it dropped to 200ft. Any clouds situated below the 300ft limit is considered unsafe. This is an international standard and there is nothing unusual or unique about what happened this morning."

The three flights, Airlink, SA Express and Kulula, were diverted to Cape Town.

When quizzed about how George Airport rates as far as cloud formations are concerned, Vorster said the airport has a reputation for being clouded out frequently and it is a common occurrence for flights to be diverted . "I expect flights to resume by this afternoon, if not sooner."

Last week a Kulula flight had to be diverted to Port Elizabeth at the last moment as strong crosswinds made it dangerous to land.
