Update: Cold front and cut-off low Western Cape - Flood damage, current events, incidents and general observations

List of current events and incidents the past 72 hours:
  • 2 people killed after being washed away by floodwater in the Robertson area.
  • Officials are searching for the body of a mentally handicapped man swept away by flood water in the Langeberg district
  • Floriskraal dam near Laingsburg 150% full. People being evacuated that lives near the damwall as precautionary measure.
  • Karoo Disaster Management on high alert and monitoring the Buffelsriver water level near Laingsburg.
  • Laingsburg Shell Ultra City service station had been flooded.
  • People were caught in rushing rivers, streams overflowed and roads were blocked off by scattered debris as parts of the Western Cape were inundated with up to 110mm of torrential rainfall. 
  • 3 people were successfully rescued from flood water by Western Cape Emergency Medical Services.
  • Residents of the Buffelsjagsrivier informal settlement and the Bontebok National Park in Swellendam were evacuated on Monday evening as a precautionary measure.
  • Agri West-Cape chief executive Carl Opperman has warned farmers to prepare for floods. 
  • Farmers have been advised to move stock from the low-lying areas and move equipment away from the rivers
  • NSRI, SA Navy, and other roll players rescue several yachts in distress - Cape to Rio Yacht Race
  • Several national and secondary roads flooded.
  • Localized flooding of houses, roads and sewerage systems flooded - several Western Cape towns.
  • Reports of intense unusual thunderstorms last night in Montagu, Barrydale and Gansbaai.
  • The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will remain on standby after flooding in Laingsburg, Western Cape officials confirmed on Wednesday. No crisis as yet.
  • The Central Karoo Disaster Management Centre as well as the South African Police Service have established a joint operation centre in Laingsburg.
  • Floriskraal dam level being monitored by Dept of Water Affairs.
