GEORGE NEWS - The areas south of the Outeniquas were spared from major
flood damage, according to Wouter Jacobs, acting chief of Eden Disaster
Management.
George received a copious 201,4mm of rain (measured at Witfontein) for
the period 4 to 14 January. In Knysna 82,2mm was recorded, in Mossel Bay
119,4mm and in Oudtshoorn 70,2mm.
Stephan Gericke, owner of the Tikketai vegetable packing plant near
Pacaltsdorp, said he was not aware of any flood damage to rural roads in
the George area.
Chantel Edwards-Klose, liaison officer of the George Municipality, said
only the "standard problems" associated with severe rains were
experienced in the town. Some low-lying informal houses were flooded and
during the downpour gunplast was provided to some families. Potholes,
overloading of sewerage systems and blocking of storm water systems were
some of the other problems needing attention.
