Flood Observation: Parts of the Southern Cape and Eastern Cape.

15h00 SAST - Flood Eminent now upgraded to Flood Occurring.

11h00 SAST - Flood Expected upgraded to Flood Eminent for parts of the Southern Cape and Eastern Cape. In an earlier post I indicated that the Flood Expected that was issued this morning at 02h10 is now being upgraded to a Flood Eminent  at 11h00.

What does this mean?

SAWXREP use four codes to keep the public informed about flooding or flash floods observations:


1. FLOOD EXPECTED: Flooding of low lying land and roads is expected. Be aware, be prepared, watch out.

What to do: 
  • Monitor local news and weather forecasts 
  • Be aware of water levels near you
  • Be prepared to act when levels rise
  • Check on the safety of pets and livestock
  • Charge you mobile phone
  • Monitor social media for weather observation report
  • Do not try to cross flooded roads, ravines or rivers 
2. FLOOD EMMINENT: Flooding of homes, roads and businesses is expected. Act now!

What to do: 
  • Move cars, pets, food, valuebles and important documents to safety
  • Be prepared to evacuate your home or business if it is prone to flooding
  • Protect yourself, your family and help others.
  • Monitor local news and weather forecasts
  • Monitor social media for real time weather observation reports
  • Be aware of rising water levels and flash flooding
3. FLOOD OCCURRING: Flooding or Flash flooding is occurring.  There is danger to life and property. Take action if and when necessary!

What to do:
  • Stay in a safe place with a means of escape. 
  • Be ready should you need to evacuate from your home. Co-operate with the emergency services and Disaster Management. 
  • Call 112, 10111 or your local emergency services if you are in immediate danger.
  • Move to higher ground and stay calm. 
4. FLOOD LEVELS DECREASING: It means that no further flooding is currently expected in your area and river or sea conditions are beginning to return to normal.
