Cold front and cut-off low could result in unseasonal weather for parts of the Western- and Southern Cape (4 - 8 January 2014)

The Southern Cape experienced rather subdued weather over the festive season with hot, humid and generally dry conditions. Ideal holiday weather with many a holiday maker spending hours on the beach enjoying the idyllic weather and events . What was noticeable was the lack of rain on Christmas Eve.  Normally precipitation makes its appearance on this day but this year there were no rain.  The weather is about to change as from the 4 January when an intense cold-front is expected to move in over the South Western Cape. This front will be accompanied by a cold-core upper-trough, which will bring change to the current "mild" conditions experienced over large parts of the Southern Cape and Garden Route areas.

A cut-off low is expected to move in over the SW Cape by Tuesday, 7 January 2014.  However it is at this stage far to early and not possible to predict it's exact position and intensity. As we all should know by now it is very hard to predict  cut-off lows but if they occur it normally result in heavy rain.  As it is currently uncertain if the cut-off low will develop, moderate rain (5-30mm)  is currently expected to fall over parts of the Western Cape.

It would however be wise to keep an eye on the weather for the predicted period as it is quite possible that parts of the Western Cape and Eastern Cape could experience unseasonal weather. It looks like an interesting few days ahead of us.

MSBWX  will bring you updates in this regard.
