SAWS SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS: 
 
WARNINGS: Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central interior of the Northern Cape, as well as the interior and Cape Metropole areas of the Western Cape.  

WATCHES: -----Nil

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: Hot and dry weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the central interior of the Northern Cape, as well as in places over the interior of the Western Cape.

MSBWX General Weather Observations:  Cool, warm to hot conditions expected today over parts of SA. Thunderstorms and rain showers can be expected in parts of Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West, Free State, Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal. Morning drizzle and fog on the escarpment of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

MSBWX National Disaster Observations:  Veld fires are burning again in parts of SA.  Please be careful around open fires, throwing away of cigarette butts and equipment that can start a fire. Be fire wise!




Cape Town shack fire leaves one dead and hundreds homeless.

A massive shack fire in Cape Town has left more than 200 people homeless. One resident died in the blaze and another is in a serious condition in hospital. It is still unclear how the fire, which destroyed over 120 shacks, started.

All 486 miners who were trapped underground at Harmony Gold's Kusasalethu mine were last night brought to the surface, a spokesman for company said.

According to a company statement, the fire at the mine near Carletonville, started nearly 2300m underground.  Harmony Gold said 486 miners were working in the Kusasalethu mine at the time.

Earlier in the day rescue teams desperately tried to reach hundreds of miners that were trapped underground.

Kusasalethu is Harmony's biggest mine.

Fire gutted University of Stellenbosch Van Der Sterr building


Firefighters has managed to douse a fire at the University of Stellenbosch. The blaze engulfed the Van Der Sterr building which houses the Accounting and Statistics departments. Large parts of the building have been severely damaged.  The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
