When the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors on NASA’s Terra and Aqua satellites passed over Libya in late December 2014, they observed black smoke plumes emanating from an oil fire in the port city of As Sidr. Smoke first became visible to satellites on December 26, 2014. The images shown above were acquired on December 29 (upper) and December 30 (lower).
