Two critically injured in Eastern Cape microlight crash

Gareth Wilson

TWO people were airlifted to a Port Elizabeth hospital after the microlight they were flying crashed on an Alicedale game farm at about 10:30am on Saturday morning (13/09/14).

Police sources have confirmed that the microlight crashed on Barry Burchells Game Reserve in Alicedale.

Police disaster management spokesman Captain John Fobian said details were sketchy and that police had arrived on the scene. ” Two of the people in the microlight have been airlifted to a hospital in Port Elizabeth. They are in a critical condition,” he said.

“The police are on the scene and the forensic unit is still en route. At this stage the cause is unknown and officers are securing the site.”

Fobian, however, declined to specify the name of the farm stating that he was awaiting feedback from the police on the ground. “We are awaiting details but at this stage I can confirm that the Civil Aviation Authority has been alerted and we are awaiting their instructions.”

The names of the pilot and passenger have not yet been released by authorities.
