SA National Weather and Disaster Observations: 23 September 2014 04h00 SAST - MSBWX

SAWS SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS:

WARNINGS:-----------Nil

WATCHES: 1. Heavy rain is expected over the eastern parts of Pixley Ka Seme municipality(VAN WYKSVLEI AND VICTORIA WEST) in the northern cape and the eastern parts of the Central Karoo as wel l as the Eden District of the western cape. 2. A high veldfire danger rating is expected along the eastern escarpment of the Eastern Cape.

SPECIAL WEATHER ADVISORIES: 1. An intense Cut - off low system is expected to develop in the west from this evening and is expected to affect the interior of the Northern Cape, as well as the eastern parts of the Western Cape. The public and stock farmers are advised that heavy falls leading to localised urban flooding can be expected. 2. Hot and humid weather wil result in extremely uncomfortable conditions over the south eastern interior of the Eastern Cape.

MSBWX National Severe Weather Observations:  Substantial reduction in the amount of fires in the past 24 hours.  53 Fires detected over the past 24 hours in South Africa.  Please contact your nearest fire fighting unit, Working on Fire or Local Fire Fighting Service when fires are observed.  The earlier a fire is detected to better the chances of extinguishing the fire.

MSBWX General Weather Observations:   Cool to warm  conditions expected today over parts of SA.  Isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers can be expected in parts of the Northern Cape, Western Cape with possible heavy rain by this afternoon and evening. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected in parts of the Eastern Cape, Karoo, Southern Cape and Kwazulu Natal. Latest forecast models reflect the development of a intense cut-off low system over the Northern Cape.  I would however like to reiterate that the amount of rain in a specific area as a result of a  cut-off low is difficult to predict. When an upper-level  low-pressure system becomes "stuck" in one place due to a lack of steering currents, it is known as being "cut off". The usual pattern which leads to this is the jet stream retreating, leaving the then cut-off system behind.

What can we possibly expect ?  (Please note weather is not an exact science.  I prefer real time weather observations rather than to rely on prediction charts.)  However here is my personal outlook for the above period.

1.   Possible moderate to heavy rain.
2.   Possibility of thunderstorms
3.   Strong to gale force winds (23 - 65 km/h)
4.   Possible flash flooding
5.   Rough Seas
6.   Bad visibility
7.   Possible Flooding
8.   Warm to humid weather in areas

It is still to early to say for certain if the system will result in severe weather, however at this stage it appears that this is a significant system that should be observed full time as from today.
