Agricultural burning is widespread in
Africa with fires breaking out in different regions at various times of
the year. On January 28, 2014, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging
Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua
satellite acquired this image, the Sahel region in West Africa was in
the midst of its burning season. Fires are marked with red boxes and
smoke hangs over the scene.
